The stretch factor...one way stretch, two way stretch, four way stretch? When it comes to stretch
fabric no two companies will give you the same information on what type of stretch your fabric is
going to have.It is important to either call the company and ask or buy a swatch to check and make
sure the terms match what you need!

One way stretch- means a fabric that stretches in only one direction, either from selvedge to selvedge
or diagonally, and usually not very much. This is also interchanged with the term mechanic stretch.
Mechanical stretch refers to a fabric that has inherent stretch due to the way the fibers are woven
and not due to a knitting process or to a lycra/spandex mix. In addition one way stretch does not
refer to fabrics that stretch naturally on the bias. Almost all woven fabrics has a little "give" on the
bias. One way stretch actually does have stretch to it and will give more than traditional bias cut wovens.
Sometimes one way stretch is also usedto denote a two way stretch fabric. Which can be
very confusing and is not an accurate label.

Two way stretch, stretches two ways- across the fabric from selvedge to selvedge, and diagonally.
This fabric can be a knit, or a woven Woven's usually have only a little bit, 5% or less spandex fiber
woven intoit. The knit goods can have as much spandex fiber as a four way stretch but still stretches
the two ways.I have seen this term used for four way stretch fabric as well, usually more often on
European fabric sites, which can be confusing. Two way stretch works best for garments where you
need stretch around the body but don't need much, or any, up and down. Garments like bras, lingerie,
ball gown dress and other garments that are not required to go completely around the length of the
torso do well with this fabric!

Four way stretch, also called all way stretch, does just that..it stretches all ways selvedge to selvedge,
diagonal and along the length of the yard. It always has some blend of lycra/spandex to it and the more
it has the stretchier it becomes. This is usually the most ideal stretch for tight fitting garments that have
to stretch around the body as well as around the length of the torso, leotards, unitards, swimwear,
body suits all fall under this category .
